Product details

Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope Bauhaus - 27/4303.02

Proudly carrying the spirit of the Bauhaus, the Junghans max bill Chronoscope Bauhaus (ref. 27/4303.02) is an automatic chronograph with a story to tell. The matt white dial is marked with luminous dots, and red inlays on the hands bring the Bauhaus palette to life alongside 30-minute and 12-hour counters and a date display.

Through the glass case back, secured by five screws, the self-winding J880.2 caliber can be seen working behind the windows of a partially transparent Bauhaus motif. The matt stainless steel case measures 40mm across and 14.4mm high and is capped with a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. With up to 48 hours of power reserve when the chronoscope function is not running, 5 bar water resistance and a black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle, it is a German automatic chronograph that honors design history every time you wear it.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

The Bauhaus was founded more than a century ago, and one of the artists and architects it trained, Max Bill, began working with Junghans in 1956. After table clocks in 1958, Bill designed Junghans' first line of mechanical wristwatches in 1961, a line Junghans still produces in nearly the same form.

Junghans presented the Bauhaus models of the max bill line in April 2024 as a trio of Automatic, Chronoscope and Regulator, sharing a matt steel case, a white dial and red accents. Their red echoes the doors of the Bauhaus building in Dessau, and the case back pictures a stylized Bauhaus building with a window onto the movement. The name Chronoscope, Junghans notes, comes from the Greek chronos (time) and skopein (to watch).
